Supermarket security in a cost of living crisis

News this week from Sky News talks about the cost of living crisis and how the Co-op are deploying a major dummy product rollout to help deter bulk thefts by shoplifters. Co-op are highlighting how thieves are entering their stores and sweeping products into rucksacks, suitcases and even wheelie bins making some areas so high risk for this retail group they might have to shut down. This news article goes on to say how Co-op are deploying undercover security guards to catch people in the act.

Shoplifting is a widespread issue in the UK, with an estimated annual cost of over £600 million to retailers, according to the British Retail Consortium. This figure underscores the need for robust security measures in supermarkets and shops across the country. To address this challenge comprehensively, retailers have turned to a combination of human and technological resources.

Connect the security dots

Defining the role of the security guard as a visible deterrent combined with being a rapid response and combining it with the electronic security systems that are available makes sense. Security guards are trained to respond swiftly and effectively to incidents of theft. Their ability to intervene immediately can prevent shoplifters from successfully leaving the premises with stolen goods. What they might not be able to do is remember each individual’s face as they enter the store, especially if shoplifters are creating distractions for security guards.

This is where CCTV comes in; closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance systems with strategically placed cameras allow for continuous monitoring of the store. These cameras not only act as a deterrent but also provide crucial evidence in case of a theft. Furthermore with the AI possibilities available in these cameras today you can spot repeat offenders or known shoplifters in the area. This is smart supermarket security for the current times we’re living in.

A safe and secure shopping environment is great for everyone, it’s much better for staff if they know they have got multiple layers of security protection within their shop.

And don’t forget to add a really good alarm system, product protection using EAS systems that consist of security tags attached to merchandise and detection gates at store entrances and exits, and a really loud tannoy with a call signal.

This is an instance where technology and people work in perfect synergy to protect your high value stock, your team and customers.
