In this blog we’re examining things Derbyshire Police highlighted in their 2024 Business Crime Reduction week and how Security Systems can help to reduce business crime.
Derbyshire Police’s Business Crime Reduction Week
They reported the following:
‘We’re supporting Safer Business Action Week, a national week of action to help reduce retail crime and support a safer business community. The week (14-20 October) involves police and partners working together across the county, holding targeted enforcement against known offenders, and promoting crime reduction methods. Crime against a business can take many forms: from shoplifting and people not paying in restaurants, to staff theft and burglary. It also includes aggressive, abusive, or violent behaviour against retail workers. It affects not only large organisations, but also smaller independent businesses, and can have a significant impact on victims and communities. We know many incidents go unreported and we want to encourage retailers to report to us where they can.

Security Systems to help with crime reduction
In today’s business world, crime prevention is more important than ever, with security systems providing a key layer of protection. From advanced surveillance cameras to access control mechanisms, these technologies play a significant role in deterring crime, safeguarding employees, and protecting assets. Here’s how modern security systems help reduce business crime and support safer business environments.
1. Deterrence Against Theft and Vandalism
Visible security measures like CCTV cameras and alarm systems can significantly discourage potential criminals. When individuals know they’re being watched or that their actions could trigger alarms, they’re less likely to target the business. Security cameras provide real-time monitoring and deter crimes like theft, shoplifting, and vandalism. This simple visual presence of a camera often leads criminals to think twice before engaging in illegal activity.
2. Monitoring and Response Capabilities
Security systems enable remote monitoring and timely responses, which can prevent crime escalation. By integrating motion detectors, alarms, and camera feeds, security teams can respond swiftly to suspicious activities. Many systems also provide alerts directly to business owners or security personnel via mobile devices, ensuring rapid responses to security breaches or incidents, even after hours.
3. Evidence Collection for Investigations
High-definition cameras and recording systems capture clear footage that can be used as evidence if a crime does occur. This footage aids in identifying perpetrators, supporting police investigations, and facilitating insurance claims. Detailed visual records are invaluable in identifying suspects, establishing timelines, and providing a clearer picture of events. Video evidence also strengthens a business’s legal position in cases of disputes or vandalism.
4. Access Control to Secure Restricted Areas
Access control systems restrict entry to authorised personnel only, making it more difficult for intruders or unauthorized individuals to access sensitive areas. From keycard access to biometric verification, these systems help prevent unauthorised entry, protecting both physical and digital assets. Businesses can monitor who enters and exits restricted areas, creating accountability and reducing internal theft risks.
5. Protection for Employees and Customers
A secure environment ensures the safety of employees and customers, which is essential for any business. Security systems can help prevent incidents of aggression or harassment by monitoring areas and alerting security personnel in real time. Employees are also more confident and productive when they feel safe at work, contributing to a positive business environment.
6. Deterring Repeat Offenders
Security systems also contribute to long-term crime prevention. Businesses with visible security measures are less likely to become repeat targets. When law enforcement can use security footage and alarm logs effectively, it creates a deterrent effect within the local criminal community, further reducing crime risks.
7. Supporting Law Enforcement and Community Initiatives
Security systems complement local law enforcement efforts by providing essential data that can lead to arrests and prevent future crimes. For example, during initiatives like the “Safer Business Action Week” led by Derbyshire Constabulary, businesses and law enforcement collaborate, emphasising the role of security systems in proactive crime prevention. This cooperative approach ensures that businesses can respond quickly and responsibly, using alerts and data sharing to help identify crime trends and respond strategically.
Derbyshire business JKE have helped
JKE are based in Derby; we work with a range of business sizes and organisation types to install and maintain physical security systems. Over 2024 we’ve supported an MOT garage whose premises were targeted for a planned theft with high value equipment being stolen. We provided a CCTV and intruder alarm installation for the garage which included an app for alerts on their cameras and alarm.
We’ve supported smaller offices across the city centre with all elements including access control, fire alarms installation, fire door installs, intruder alarm and surveillance cameras; many business owners and landlords take a proactive approach to installing these systems during a refurbishment project or when new tenants arrive. The level of security systems can depend on the business type; a recent SAS business required all elements for their city centre based office.
We also have supported a new gym in a city centre location with access control and camera installation; they wanted to keep staff and gym members safe during their time at the gym by restricting access from the street and also inside the premises. Some members had access to multiple areas whilst others did not which enabled them to manage both membership levels and security within the gym.
Security systems are essential in today’s landscape of business crime prevention, safeguarding assets, ensuring employee and customer safety, and strengthening relationships with law enforcement. By adopting comprehensive security measures, businesses can create a strong deterrent, ensuring a safe and productive environment.
