For many businesses, the car park is the first thing a visitor sees. It’s also often the most vulnerable part of your premises. Whether you’re managing a retail park, a healthcare facility, or an office block, your car park is a high-traffic zone where theft, vandalism, and accidents can happen in the blink of an eye.
Yet, despite investing in CCTV systems, many business owners find that when they actually need the footage: to identify a shoplifter’s getaway car or settle an insurance claim: the images are blurry, the angle is wrong, or the key moment happened in a blind spot.

1. The "Drunken Angle": Mounting Cameras Too High
It’s a natural instinct to want to mount cameras as high as possible to get a "bird’s-eye view" and protect the equipment from being tampered with. However, if your camera is 10 metres up in the air, you aren't capturing faces; you’re capturing the tops of people's heads and hats.
In the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) guidelines and police standards emphasise that for footage to be useful as evidence, it needs to provide "identifiable" images.
The Fix:
For general car park surveillance, cameras should ideally be mounted between 3 and 6 metres high. If you are using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), the vertical tilt should be no more than 30 degrees to avoid "plate skew," which prevents the software from reading the characters correctly. If you’re worried about vandalism, we recommend using "vandal-resistant" dome cameras or placing them in positions that are hard to reach but still provide a clear line of sight.
2. Headlight Blindness: Ignoring Nighttime Glare
Have you ever looked at your car park footage at night only to see two bright white orbs and a black screen? That’s headlight glare. When a camera is mounted too low (at or near headlight level), the direct beam of a car’s lights can "blind" the sensor, washing out the entire image.
The Fix:
Mount your entrance and exit cameras at least one metre above the average headlight height of a vehicle. Additionally, ensure your cameras are equipped with Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) and high-quality Infrared (IR) filters. This technology balances the light in a scene, allowing the camera to see the number plate and the driver even when bright headlights are pointing directly at the lens.
3. The "Ghostly Silhouette" Problem: Poor Lighting
Many car parks rely on ambient street lighting or low-energy PIR (Passive Infrared) lights. While these might be enough for a human to walk safely, they often aren't enough for a standard CCTV camera to produce a crisp image. This results in "ghosting": where moving objects appear as blurry, translucent shapes.
The Fix:
Don't just rely on the camera’s built-in IR. For large car parks, we often recommend dedicated LED floodlights that illuminate the entire area evenly. Even better, consider Full-Colour Night Vision cameras. These systems use ultra-sensitive sensors to provide high-definition, full-colour footage even in near-total darkness, which can be the difference between "a person in a dark hoodie" and "a person in a navy-blue Nike tracksuit."
4. Neglecting ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition)
Standard CCTV cameras are great for seeing what happened, but they are often terrible at reading number plates, especially if the car is moving. If a vehicle hits another car in your car park and drives off, a standard camera might give you the make and colour, but it won't give you the one thing the police need: the registration.
The Fix:
If security and accountability are your priorities, you need a dedicated ANPR system. ANPR cameras are specifically designed to ignore glare and focus solely on capturing reflective number plates. By integrating ANPR with access control barriers, you can even automate entry for staff or known visitors, making your site more efficient and secure.
5. Compliance Catastrophes: Ignoring GDPR and Signage
In the UK, if you operate CCTV in a car park, you are a "Data Controller." This means you must comply with the Data Protection Act and UK GDPR. Two of the biggest mistakes we see are:
- No Signage: If people don’t know they are being recorded, you are breaking the law.
- Invasive Angles: If your camera is "accidentally" filming into a neighbour’s bedroom or a public garden, you are infringing on privacy rights.
The Fix:
Install clear, weather-resistant signs at every entrance and key points within the car park. These signs should state that CCTV is in operation, the purpose (e.g., "For Public Safety and Crime Prevention"), and the contact details of the operator. Furthermore, use Privacy Masking software to digitally block out any non-relevant or private areas from the camera's field of view.
6. The "Install and Forget" Trap: Lack of Maintenance
A spider web over a lens, a build-up of road grime, or a hard drive that stopped recording three weeks ago: these are the reasons why most security systems fail when they are needed most. Car park cameras are exposed to the worst of the British weather, and they get dirty fast.

Security is not a one-time purchase; it’s an ongoing commitment. We recommend a professional maintenance contract. A technician should visit at least once a year to clean the lenses, check the focus, test the IR illuminators, and ensure the recording system is functioning correctly.
7. Blind Spots: Trying to Do Too Much with One Camera
We often see business owners trying to save money by using a single "fisheye" or 360-degree camera to cover a massive car park. While these cameras have their place, the further away an object is from the lens, the lower the pixel density becomes. If an incident happens at the edge of the car park, the footage will be too pixelated to be useful.
The Fix:
Instead of one "hero" camera, use a combination of strategic placements. Use high-detail, narrow-angle cameras for entrances and exits (for plates and faces) and wider-angle cameras for general area coverage. A professional site survey will identify "blind spots" behind pillars, ticket machines, or stairwells that an untrained eye might miss.
